Your Eyes as You Age

Your Eyes as You Age

The eyes are the "window to the soul." This has been said countless times by numerous people and it definitely holds some truth. Women have it rough however. As women age, their eyes become a sign of that aging. Women develop fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles. This can occur from a full life of laughing and sleepless nights with children. While it is an indicator of age, it is also an indicator of a life filled with stories and memories. That does not mean that women should display these signs proudly if they choose not to. There are ways to reduce these signs of aging from around the eyes with proper eye cream and care.

Opting out of Surgery

Many women are choosing to undergo surgery in order to reduce and remove the fine lines and wrinkles that naturally occur around the eyes. Others are opting for injections such as Botox. Both of these are pricy solutions that can be avoided if a woman is prepared to make eye care part of her daily routine. It takes mere minutes to apply an eye cream that can effectively hide these signs of aging from around the eyes.

The Daily Routine for Eye Care

Every woman has a daily routine. It ranges drastically from woman to woman, but generally involves applying something to her face. There are creams available that will cover those fine lines and wrinkles as well as covering sagging, puffiness, and dark circles under the eyes. Many manufacturers claim that their product will perform these eye care essentials; however few actually do so satisfactorily. It is important to find a reputable manufacturer and retailer to ensure that a product is going to do what it claims to do.

The right cream is going to offer certain guarantees. It should guarantee the product to work for at least eight hours. This gives every woman enough time to put her best face forward. The eye cream should be applied under regular cosmetics. It should effectively cover up the signs of aging that the eyes often give away as well as hiding under eye puffiness caused from lack of sleep. It is easy to add this simple step to a regular beauty routine and the results are worth the extra minutes needed to apply eye cream.

Using an Eye Cream Regularly

Those eye creams that offer lasting results, after prolonged use, usually do not work as well as those that offer quick results. These eye care products are also upfront about the time constraints of the product. An under eye cream that works for eight hours may need to be reapplied prior to an evening out. This should not be considered as a sign of an inferior product, but proof that the product works effectively, even if for a limited time.

An under eye cream can be used at any time. It can be used prior to going out for a night on the town, or used the next day to hide the effects of the previous evening. A woman can add this to her beauty routine for any time of the day and for any occasion. It does not need to be applied every single day in order to see results. If a woman is spending the day at home, why should she have to go through the trouble of remembering to put on eye cream? Instead, she can take the time to relax and not worry because she need only apply her eye cream on occasions that she chooses. It is not necessary to apply it every day or more than once a day in order to obtain the best results.

Women need to be careful about the products they choose to apply to their face. An eye cream is going to help reduce the natural signs of aging that are noticeable around the eyes. Dark circles, sagging, puffiness, wrinkles, and fine lines can all be fixed by applying the right eye cream!

Back to basics

Back to basics

Despite media coverage of makeover reality shows, most of us aren’t looking for extreme transformations – just to look better naturally. And it really is very simple. To get that timeless, healthy look, you need to start with an appropriate skincare regime. Taking good care of your skin can stave off fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and even dry skin.

Where to begin?

At the sink! Doctors say whatever your skin type, the key is to cleanse it gently. Avoid hot water and use lukewarm instead, to prevent over-drying. And throw in the towel – traditional washcloths are too abrasive for the face, so use your hands and fingers.

Sixty-eight-percent of women claim to have sensitive skin which means dry, tight, chapped or easily irritated skin. Moisturising regularly and avoiding harsh cleansers with ingredients such as fragrances, dyes and preservatives because sensitive skin is easily damaged and takes longer to recover.

If your skin is dry and easily irritated, don’t wash more than once a day. You may risk stripping the skin of its natural oils. Look for non-irritating cleansing washes that are soap-free, moisturisers that are light, oil-free, and water-based to help maintain the skin’s natural barrier.

Another tip - make sure to choose a facial moisturiser with an SPF of at least 15 that protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

Skin sensitivity may also result from the third most common, non-surgical skincare procedure - Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a quick and easy, non-invasive procedure that helps to reveal healthier-looking skin by sweeping away dead skin cells. Following the treatment, the best way to avoid irritation is by opting for an ultra-gentle cleanser and moisturiser.

How else can you obtain optimal skin health? Exercise opens up blood vessels to make skin look healthy and youthful. Regular cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow to the skin which assists in collagen production. Maintaining muscle mass through exercise can also help anchor and support skin, keeping it taut.

And drink up! At least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day are crucial for optimal skin hydration.

So before you sign on for an extreme and expensive makeover, just think back on some simple, beauty basics!

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

So you try to eat properly and exercise regularly but if you're not getting enough sleep, chances are you don't look or feel as good as you should. Sleep is essential for the healing and regeneration of our skin, which is why night creams are 'richer' and more nourishing than day creams...

But the richest serums in the world aren't going to keep your skin pretty if you are suffering from lack of sleep - puffy, bloodshot eyes, dark circles, dry skin, acne flare-ups, irritability and even hair loss are surefire signs you aren't getting the 7.5 - 8 hours sleep your body needs.

Make the most of your beauty sleep with the following pamper rituals...

. As the weather gets cooler our skin is especially dry so be sure to moisturize not only your face but the rest of your body with a nourishing cream or body oil. Slather your

feet in Vaseline or baby oil and pop some socks on for extra soft skin in the morning.

. Swap your cotton pillow-case for a satin one. It helps stop your hair from getting tangled when you toss and turn and as it is gentler on the facial skin.

. All those nights of being curled up in the fetal position with your face squished into the pillow eventually shows up in wrinkles around the eyes. Try sleeping on your back -

it is better for your health, better for the effects of gravity on your face and means you won't be creating folds in your face while you are in the land of nod.

. If your hair is dry and you will be washing it in the morning, try sleeping with a nourishing mask or even household oils (coconut, olive and avocado oils all work beautifully

on the hair) gently massaged through the strands. Give the scalp a good massage to help stimulate hair growth and nourish the roots. Oil is a marvelous treatment that

can be washed out in the morning and is nourishing on the skin too.

 · Try a nail and cuticle treatment for extra hand nourishing that you can't get during the day. Even nappyrash cream can make a great cuticle cream to keep the skin

    around your cuticles soft.

Sleep tight...

It can feel like there is nothing worse when the alarm goes off in the morning and you have spent the wee hours staring at the ceiling twiddling your thumbs. If sleep deprivation is a problem for you, read on for tips to get back into a good sleeping pattern again.

Before bed

· Try relaxing exercise such as yoga, pilates or even meditation to slow your thought process and get your breathing deep and regular.

· Avoid caffeine from 2pm as it is a stimulant that can keep you awake... This includes chocolate, tea and coffee.

· Make sure your room temperature is cool. Use a fan if necessary.

· Avoid nicotine as it is also a stimulant.

· Try having a relaxing bath with a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the water.

. Avoid alcohol before bed. Initially it may help you relax, but chances are the sugars in the alcohol will keep you awake later in the night.

In the bedroom

· If stress is keeping you awake, keep a notepad and pen beside the bed and make a list of things that are concerning you before you turn out the light.

· Turn your clock so you cannot see it - if you can see it, the chances are you will clock-watch.

· Make sure your room is quiet - if you get disturbed by noises invest in some ear-plugs.

· Keep the bedroom for sleeping, so don't watch TV or work in the bedroom.

Scalp Care Tips for Men

Scalp Care Tips for Men

A Healthy Scalp Is Key to Great Looking Hair

There's no such thing as healthy hair. Hair is basically protein and has no nervous system or blood supply and, as such, does not have reparative properties. The scalp, on the other hand, does. Since your hair is an extension of the scalp, it makes sense that a healthy scalp helps ensure healthy looking hair. For keeping that scalp healthy, follow these quick and easy scalp care tips will help you keep your scalp in top condition.

Wash Daily

Keeping your scalp clean is key to minimizing clogged pores and other scalp problems. Use a gentle shampoo and wash once each day, working the shampoo into the hair and scalp for about two minutes. Don't bother with the "rinse and repeat" part. One good wash should be sufficient.

Exfoliate Weekly

Once or twice per week, remove dead skin cells and dirt from the scalp with an exfoliating scrub. A scrub made for the face is gentle enough to be used on the scalp.

Massage Scalp

Massage is beneficial because it helps promote good blood flow to the scalp, helps to keep the scalp flexible, soothes nerves and relaxes muscles. Scalp massage also promotes hair growth and luster. It feels great, too. One each week, massage the scalp with the fingertips using a firm pressure in a circular motion. Place the fingers under the hair to avoid pulling. Perform this exercise for three or four minutes.

Avoid Drying Problem

One of the main causes of dry scalp is shampooing with water that is too hot. This can strip essentials oils from the skin and cause dryness. Wash hair in lukewarm water to help retain those essential oils. Excessive blow drying of the hair can also promote a dry scalp. If you notice excessive drying, a good leave-in conditioner can help replenish moisture to the scalp.

Protect Your Scalp from the Sun

The scalp is particularly susceptible to sun burn and skin cancer. With a little consistent planning, it's relatively easy to protect your scalp from the sun.

Maintaining a great looking head of hair starts with a healthy scalp. Follow the tips above to help ensure yours stays in great shape.

Hair Care Tips for Men

Hair Care Tips for Men

Keeping a Healthy Looking Head of Hair

Hair is basically protein and keratin with no blood supply or nervous system and has no reparative qualities. Hair is not alive, so it cannot be healthy. Once damage has occurred, the only way to repair the hair is to cut off the damaged length. Of course, a healthy looking head of hair starts with a great looking haircut, but that's just the beginning. Like your car, your hair needs maintenance in order to preserve strength, elasticity, and shine. Following are my hair care tips for men.

Pat Dry
Towel drying is one of the biggest causes of damage to men's hair. When hair is wet, it is highly susceptible to damage. When the hair is rubbed with a towel, some of the hairs become tangled in the threads of the towel and become stretched to the breaking point, causing damage to the cuticle (the shingle-like outer layer of the hair), frizziness, and split ends. To properly towel dry, shake out the excess water and stroke your hair in the direction it grows, rather than rubbing the hair with the towel. Drying takes a bit longer this way but after a few haircuts, you'll notice the difference in the way your hair looks. Blow drying is also a common cause of damage to the hair. Excessive blow drying can dry out the hair and scalp. If you must use a blow dryer, apply a thermal styling spray or detangler to coat the hair and protect it from damage, use a wide-tooth comb to prevent pulling, and always leave the hair slightly damp. This will prevent over drying the hair.

Cool Off
Nothing feels better than a piping hot shower, but it's wreaking havoc on your hair and scalp. Very hot water strips too much of the essential oil from the hair and scalp and leads to dryness.

Avoid Chemical Treatments
Repeatedly coloring or perming hair can leave it damaged, dry, and dull. I recommend avoiding at-home chemical products and seek a good stylist for such services. A stylist will know how to properly prepare you hair and choose the best products for your hair type. Results from a trained professional will almost always look more natural than those which can be produced at home.

Use a Good Shampoo and Conditioner
A good shampoo and conditioner will help cleanse the hair, add moisture and elasticity, and smooth the cuticle to add shine.

Use the Right Tools

Don't use a brush on wet hair, when the hair is most vulnerable. When combing through wet hair, use a wide-toothed comb and gently work out any tangles. Avoid heated tools such as blow dryers or irons which can dry and damage hair.

Stay Healthy
The condition of your hair is often a reflection of the overall health of your body. Eat well, exercise, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and reduce stress in your life. Doing so will result in a healthier scalp and great looking hair. Living well and staying healthy will also increase the rate of hair growth.

Avoid Tight Hats
A tight hat (or ponytail) can cause "traction alopecia," a condition in which hair is pulled out of the scalp. If worn long enough, the damage can become permanent. A tight hat or ponytail can also cause damage to the cuticle and breakage.

Keep it Trimmed
Since the only real way to remove damaged hair is to cut off the damaged section, keeping your hair trimmed regularly will help eliminate split ends. Even if you're growing your hair out, make sure to get it trimmed about every six weeks, but make it clear to your barber or stylist that you only want enough hair removed to eliminate the damage.

Reduce Frizz
Low moisture and protein in the hair can cause frizz. To minimize this problem, use a good moisturizing conditioner. A slick, smoothing serum can be applied to add shine and give the hair a smoother appearance.

Maintain a Healthy Scalp
Hair starts from the scalp, so for hair that's sleek, strong, and shiny, make sure you take good care of your scalp by following the Scalp Care Tips.

Since hair is such a big part of your appearance, keeping it well maintained will make you more attractive. Following the simple guidelines above will put you on your way to a healthy looking head of hair.

5 Fitness Scams

5 Fitness Scams

Great ideas come and go. While the really good ones stick around, more often than not, fitness trends fall by the wayside. It can be quite hard to tell the difference between fad and fitness, so we often spend time, effort and money on something that doesn’t do what it claims to do. Read on so you are not fooled by the scams you think are fitness facts.

Scam No. 1: The Electronic Ab Exerciser

What this was: A machine that would send electric currents to your abs, making them contract and release, thus causing you to burn off body fat.

Why it was doomed to fail:
Losing body fat requires a combination of cardiovascular exercise and a reduced-calorie diet. You cannot spot reduce to lose weight. The body burns fat according to its genetic predisposition, so the only way to burn fat off is by doing the work yourself. A machine won’t do it for you.

Ultimate fate: The Electronic Ab Exerciser was quickly found to be unsuccessful; people soon realized this quick fix was nothing more than a waste of time, money and electricity.

Scam No. 2: The Ab Crunch Craze

What this was: A bunch of videos and programs that guaranteed you a six-pack by having you do an endless amount of sit-ups.

Why it was doomed to fail: No matter how many sit-ups you do, if you are not combining a healthy diet with strength training and cardio, you will not be able to see your abs. You must remove the layer of body fat that is covering your abdominal muscles in order for them to be visible.

Ultimate fate: After years of crunching away on exercise mats with little or no
progress, people finally gave up on this scam. They either got tired of doing so many crunches or they just lost the motivation to work out altogether. Today, many people still hold the belief that doing more sit-ups will lead to sexy abs, and they are half right: Strengthening these muscles will help them look better, but sit-ups alone won’t do the trick. In order to get the six-pack you've always dreamed of, you must also watch what you eat and do a full-body workout that incorporates cardio and strength training along with your sit-ups.

Learn about the sex workout scam, getting bigger arms in 24 hours and more.

Scam No. 3: Exercise in a Bottle

What this was: A supplement that "guaranteed" you more fat loss and exercise capability.

Why it was doomed to fail:
While you can enhance your metabolism with certain supplements, you can never replace physical training when it comes to improving your cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. Proponents of this scam knew that many people were just looking for an easy way to get a fit body. With proper marketing schemes, they sucked in thousands of customers who were too lazy to put in the hard work.

Ultimate fate:
Many overweight people bought into this scam only to find out that the pills did not work. They realized that taking supplements can only do so much, and that good results do not come that easily.

Scam No. 4: The Sex Workout

What this was: Certain authors claimed that you could lose weight by having sex.

Why it was doomed to fail:
While sex is highly enjoyable, it does not burn enough  calories to lead to any major weight loss results.

Ultimate fate:
A few people still believe in this principle, but the real reason sex helps some individuals shed pounds may be related to its underlying mechanisms. If people are having more sex, chances are they are eating less because they have less time to raid the fridge. They also release more sexual hormones, which are known to reduce the desire to eat.

Scam No. 5: The 24-Hour Arm Workout

What this was: An arm workout that was designed to make you gain 3/8 of an inch on your arms in 24 hours. You were given a specific diet to follow and a workout to do each hour.

Why it was doomed to fail:
This scam relied more on inflammation and tissue damage to measure growth than anything else. After performing such a high  workload, your muscle fibers become highly damaged and inflamed. Plus, with an increase in carbs in your diet, you take in extra water, which leads to a fuller look. Although the 24-hour arm workout may leave your pipes looking larger than before, the muscles themselves are not getting any bigger.

Ultimate fate:
Some people have given this workout a try only to realize its results are short-lived. In order for your muscles to grow, they need time to recover. If you want bigger arms, it’s going to take dedication, persistence and time. It will not happen in 24 hours.

DON'T BE A SUCKER

Next time you are reading about the latest fitness product, make sure to evaluate what the source is and how credible its claims are. If you feel it may be a good idea, give it a try for a short period of time, but if no progress is seen, let it go and replace it with a more traditional method of training.

The Best Health Drink for Your Body

The Best Health Drink for Your Body

Now more than ever, people are looking for the best ways to take care of their body. Whether it's exercise, eating and drinking the right foods, or taking the latest supplements, individuals are searching for that extra boost to give their body an advantage. One vital way to help your system meet its fitness goals, or even to improve how you feel from day to day, is to regularly gulp down a health drink that's rich in natural ingredients and doesn't contain empty calories.

One of the problems you will inevitably face is actually making your selection, as there are many varieties of health drinks and they all pretty much claim the same benefits: all natural, 100% pure, no artificial flavors, and so forth. So, what should you do in order to get what's best for your body?

Obviously, you cannot solely rely on the special fonts or attention grabbing graphics on the packaging. You have to take the time to read all of the ingredients in the nutrition facts section of the box or bottle and determine if the listed items are indeed all natural.

A few features to look for in a confirmed health drink are juices from actual berries, fruit, or other organic plants or any types of extracts from similar origins. Be aware that any drink that lists ingredients with words such as "artificial," "partial," and "processed," just to name a few, most likely aren't as beneficial for your body's wellbeing.

Another aspect to inspect is the claims that the product makes about health or fitness promotion. What exactly will the drink provide your body? Is it more energy for exercise? Is it to help you stay alert after a long day? How about greater strength during strenuous workouts? Whatever the advertised advantages, be sure to find out if the statement has any research behind it.

For example, perhaps the declaration for added energy during workouts has been proven over a six-month study and scientific research. If that is the case, you can feel more confident in the product than others that just make assumptions based from "common knowledge" that fruits are good for you.

Lastly, you will have to try a couple of different types to see how your body functions with the particular beverage in your system. As you know, everyone's body is distinctive, especially when it comes to foods, drinks, and supplements. Try a few brands and keep records of how your body feels and performs. Find a health drink that enhances your body's performance and you will be well on your way to a better, healthier lifestyle.

Health and Fitness

Health and Fitness

Recent studies have shown that obesity rates are still on the rise. Despite all of the health and fitness knowledge, and healthy diet choices that are available, people are still gaining weight at an unhealthy rate. For many people, diets and workouts are a part of the rollercoaster of weight loss and gain that they have been on for years. They lose some weight, then they gain it all back, and then some. What they really need is a new mindset about the way they live their daily lives. Most health and fitness experts agree that the majority of weight problems people face are more mental issues than they are actual physical problems. Shows like “The Biggest Loser” show how much of the weight loss process requires a mental and emotional transformation along with the physical workouts.

Take the word “diet” as an example. People who have spent a lifetime struggling with their weight like to say, “Diets don’t work for me.” That just goes to show the misconception we have, and the connotation we give certain words. The reality is, a diet is a word that describes the food you eat. You are all on a diet. Some are healthy diets, some are unhealthy diets, but everyone has a diet. In order to improve your health and fitness, you need to start thinking about it as being on a diet, and start looking at it as a part of a healthier lifestyle.

For some people it is an issue of motivation. If they do not feel motivated, they will not make the effort required for a healthier lifestyle. They will not do the workouts necessary to burn calories, they will not eat the fruits and vegetable to keep their diet balanced, and they will not do away with the unhealthy snacks that will derail weight loss efforts. What you need to understand is, if the healthier lifestyle is important to you, then you need to force yourself to do what it takes, and not wait for the proper motivation. As you continue to get healthier, the motivation to continue will come, but that is an after-effect. Motivation rarely comes first for beginners.

Proper health and fitness is something that can only come about as a result of a healthy mindset. It is only by changing the way we think about losing weight and getting fit that the physical change will actually happen. It requires a change in your mindset. If you can change the way you think about health and fitness, you can change the way you look.

How Can I Manage My Emotional Eating and Get the Support I Need?

97. A registered dietitian (RD) can help you find healthy ways to manage your weight with food. To find one in your area who consults with private clients check out the ads at the top of  the page, ask your friends or consult your yellow pages

98. The best place to drop pounds may be your own house of worship. Researchers set up healthy eating and exercise programs in 16 Baltimore churches. More than 500 women participated and after a year the most successful lost an average of 20 lb. Weight loss programs based on faith are so successful because there’s a built-in community component that people can feel comfortable with.

99. Here’s another reason to keep level-headed all the time: Pennsylvania State University research has found that women less able to cope with stress—shown by blood pressure and heart rate elevations—ate twice as many fatty snacks as stress-resistant women did, even after the stress stopped (in this case, 25 minutes of periodic jackhammer-level noise and an unsolvable maze).

100. Sitting at a computer may help you slim down. When researchers at Brown University School of Medicine put 92 people on online weight loss programs for a year, those who received weekly e-mail counseling shed 5 1/2 more pounds than those who got none. Counselors provided weekly feedback on diet and exercise logs, answered questions, and cheered them on. Most major online diet programs offer many of these features.
